Today I am interviewing Lincoln Cole, author of the new paranormal novel, The Bishop’s Legacy, final book in the World of Shadows series.

DJ: Hi Lincoln! Thanks for agreeing to do this interview!
For readers who aren’t familiar with you, could you tell us a little about yourself?
Lincoln: Absolutely! So, in the real world, I am a full-time software developer. In my spare time I have two main hobbies: writing, and developing Alexa skills for Amazon devices. All in all, it keeps me incredibly busy and without much free time!
DJ: What is The Bishop’s Legacy and then the World of Shadows series about?
Lincoln: It is about a hapless priest who has spent his life convincing himself that demons are not real and then being confronted with the alternate version of that possibility in the most terrifying way possible. It also ties into the World on Fire series, which takes place twenty years later, and introduces readers to Abigail and Arthur.
DJ: What were some of your influences for the World of Shadows series?
Lincoln: I love the movie the exorcist, as well as the television show, but I also love things that have more action and excitement in them. I wanted to tell a story that was terrifying and exciting all at once and managed to capture a lot of emotions and genres. In general, my main influences stylistically are Stephen King and Isaac Asimov.DJ: Could you briefly tell us a little about your main characters? Do they have any cool quirks or habits, or any reason why readers with sympathize with them?
Lincoln: Niccolo is the main character of this series, and what makes him interesting is that he has actually trained as an exorcist, but it was a training he believed was to help him deal with the ‘inner natures of humanity’ and not an external threat. He isn’t even a believer in demons until it is thrust upon him, which was something I wanted to play with. Arthur is also dealing with personal strife and failings and is trying to turn himself into a better man. The path he was on before cost him everything, and now he needs to find a way to move forward.
DJ: What is the world and setting of the the World of Shadows series like?
Lincoln: The setting moves all over the place, starting in Washington, heading to California and Colorado, and ending up in Ohio. It is meant to be similar to our world, but an alternate reality where the facts don’t match up perfectly. That way it gives me more leeway to do crazy or unbelievable things without people constantly trying to fact check.
DJ: How have the reviews been from readers, bloggers, and reviewers for the first two book of the World of Shadows series? Is there anything that your audience seems to be particularly enjoying or is eager to find out more about?
Lincoln: The audience reception has been great for the books with a lot of people telling me they’ve had fun reading the series. I think people are enjoying the ongoing aspect of the story where each series stands on its own but is a part of a larger web of stories. I like those interconnected threads, and I’m glad that readers seem to enjoy it as well.
DJ: What was your favorite part about writing The Bishop’s Legacy?
Lincoln: This was the one I wanted to just let loose and fill with action and craziness. The first book set up the world, the second book raised the stakes, and the third book is where everything just falls apart around the main characters. I enjoyed writing the antagonist and setting up that conflict, because I think he is an easy person to root against.
DJ: What do you think readers will be talking about most once they finish it?
Lincoln: What comes next? There is a lot more to this ongoing story that needs to be filled in, and I think people want to know what happened at the end of the novel and where it will go from here.
DJ: Did you have a goal when you began writing The World of Shadows series? Was there a particular message or meaning you are hoping to get across when readers finish it? Or is there perhaps a certain theme to the story?
Lincoln: I didn’t really have a goal with this one. I don’t write books to try and change lives or force a theme down someone’s throat. I write stories to have fun and entertain readers. It is just something for fun.
DJ: I’m always curious when authors finish a series, how close to the original course they stayed when it is finally completed or if it ended up evolving and changing. Did the plot stay the same as you had first imagined it? How about the ending? The evolution of your characters?
Lincoln: When I finished it wasn’t even close to what I originally envisioned, but that is because the characters change. When they change, so does the world and their situation, and gradually new events unfold. That is what makes it fun, because I’m just as surprised as the reader about how things turn out.
DJ: When I read, I love to collect quotes – whether it be because they’re funny, foodie, or have a personal meaning to me. Do you have any favorite quotes from The Bishop’s Legacy that you can share with us?
Lincoln: I don’t generally keep track of quotes that I think will be interesting, because it almost never matches up to what readers think are interesting. For me it is way more fun to go onto sites like goodreads and see what people highlight or save the most. Often it is something really surprising and a quote I never would have guessed people enjoy.
DJ: Now that The Bishop’s Legacy is released, what is next for you?
Lincoln: I’m finishing up my current project, CRISPR to get ready for a 2018 release, and I’m also working like crazy on a couple of Alexa skills. I have about ten skills released already, and my newest ones are the most ambitious yet! One of them is a trivia game designed for parties, one is an interactive novel where readers can choose their own path through a wholly unique story, and the final one is an interactive bedtime story skill for kids. They are a lot of fun to write and I can’t wait to get them out into the world. A new way to flex my creative muscles!
DJ: Where can readers find out more about you?

DJ: Before we go, what is that one thing you’d like readers to know about The Bishop’s Legacy and the World of Shadows series that we haven’t talked about yet?
Lincoln: I write my stories to have fun, and I’m always trying to improve. If you ever have any comments, complaints, or just want to get in touch you can reach me through my website! I love hearing from readers!
DJ: Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to answer my questions!
Lincoln: No problem at all! Thanks for having me!

Everything is falling apart for Niccolo Paladina as his mistakes come back to haunt him. He’s been reminded once more that the shadowy world in which Arthur inhabits is not his own.
He is ready to face the consequences for his actions, but not until he has dealt with the threat he’s helped to create. Things are getting desperate, though, and they are worried that more people will be hurt before they can bring things to an end.
