Author Interview: Tim Lebbon

Today I am interviewing Tim Lebbon, author of the new urban fantasy, horror novel, The Folded Lands, sequel to Relics.

DJ: Hi Tim! Thanks for agreeing to do this interview!

For readers who aren’t familiar with you, could you tell us a little about yourself?

Tim Lebbon: Thanks for having me! I’ve been writing for a long time now, published for twenty years, and I’m working hard towards becoming an overnight success. I’ve had over 40 novels published (quite a few in collaboration with Christopher Golden), dozens of novellas, hundreds of short stories, and I’ve also written a few screenplays. I’ve won some awards, and I’ve been writing for a living for over a decade. I’ve also had two movies made from my books, both starring Oscar winning actors! Pay the Ghost (Nicolas Cage) and The Silence (Stanley Tucci).

DJ: What is The Folded Land and the series about?

Tim: In the first book Relics I established a version of our world in which the relics of mythological creatures are traded, much in the way that rhino horns or tiger pelts are traded now. When my characters discover that some of these relics are fresh … we realise that some of these creatures still exist. Some people want to help them, some want to hunt them. Some creatures want to hide, and some want to rise up against humanity. In The Folded Land I expand that story, with all these separate desires causing more conflict and trouble. I really don’t want to give too much away … hope that’s intriguing enough!

DJ: What were some of your influences for The Folded Lands?

Tim: I find it really difficult to pin down influences. I guess modern-day big game hunting and the illegal trades in ivory, and the depressing fact that some amazing creatures are edged towards extinction simply so that a small part of their bodies can be used in useless ‘medicines’.

DJ: Could you briefly tell us a little about your main characters? Do they have any cool quirks or habits, or any reason why readers with sympathize with them?

Tim: Vince and Angela are my main characters, although there are plenty of others (some not human). Vince adores the Kin (the mythological creatures), while to begin with his fiance Angela only wants to be safe, and to distance herself from conflict. This causes tension between them, but theirs is a real love story. Actually that’s the central core to the whole wide story––Vince’s and Angela’s love for each other.

DJ: What is the world and setting of The Folded Lands like?

Tim: Relics was set in contemporary London, The Folded Land moves the action to North America.

DJ: How have the reviews been from readers, bloggers, and reviewers for the first book Relics? Is there anything that your audience seems to be particularly enjoying or is eager to find out more about?

Tim: I was really pleased with how Relics was received. Generally reviews have been fantastic, and I’m especially pleased because the novel was something a little different for me following on from Coldbrook and The Silence.

DJ: What was your favorite part about writing The Folded Lands?

Tim: I think creating the Folded Land itself (and you’ll have to read the novel to find out what that is). I think sometimes we’d all like our own folded land to retreat to.

DJ: What do you think readers will be talking about most once they finish it?

Tim: Hopefully they’ll be asking, What happens next? There’s one more novel to come in the trilogy, The Edge, which I’ll be writing this year.

DJ: Now that The Folded Lands is released, what is next for you?

Tim: I’ll soon be starting the third book in the trilogy, The Edge. Later this year I’m writing a Firefly novel. I’m also hoping to write a screenplay or two this year as well. I love writing screenplays, so different from novels. And also, Blood of the Four is out now, a big standalone fantasy novel I’ve written with Christopher Golden.

DJ: Before we go, what is that one thing you’d like readers to know about The Folded Lands and the series that we haven’t talked about yet?

Tim: The Kin really exist.

DJ: Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to answer my questions!

Tim: Thanks very much for having me!

In the dark underbelly of our world, there’s a black market in arcane things—living and dead. Angela Gough has been pulled into this world, making her a criminal on the run.

In London she encountered the Kin—satyrs and centaurs, Nephilim and wraiths, they are hunted and slaughtered for their body parts. Fleeing back to the United States, Angela discovers that the Kin are everywhere, and they are tired of being prey.

When her niece Sammi is struck by lightning, she is drawn toward the mysterious Folded Land, and its powerful and deadly ruler. Helped by her lover Vince, caught in the midst of a Kin uprising, Angela must locate Sammi before the girl is lost forever.

About the Author:

I’m a New York Times-bestselling horror, thriller and fantasy writer from a little village in South Wales. I’ve written over 30 novels, including several in collaboration with Christopher Golden, as well as dozens of novellas and hundreds of short stories.

My latest novel, THE HUNT, is my first thriller. Lee Child calls it ‘A great thriller … breathless all the way.’

I’ve won four British Fantasy Awards, a Bram Stoker Award and a Scribe, as well as being shortlisted for the prestigious World Fantasy and Shirley Jackson Awards. A movie of my short story Pay The Ghost, starring Nicolas Cage, is due for release in 2015, and I have several other movie projects in development. I love running, biking and swimming, and often try to put them all together in long-distance triathlons. I raced my first Ironman in 2013.

I’ve also written a handful of tie-in projects connected to the Alien, Predator, Star Wars and Hellboy universes.
