Today I am interviewing Helen Scheuerer, author of the new YA fantasy novel, Reign of Mist, second book in The Oremere Chronicles.

DJ: Hi Helen! Thanks for agreeing to do this interview!
For readers who aren’t familiar with you, could you tell us a little about yourself?
Helen Scheuerer: Hi DJ, thank YOU for the opportunity! And of course 🙂 I’m a YA fantasy author from Sydney, Australia. Last year I released my debut novel, Heart of Mist, the first book in The Oremere Chronicles. I’ve recently gone full-time as an author, and I also run an established writing advice website for emerging writers called Writer’s Edit.
DJ: What is Reign of Mist and then The Oremere Chronicles about?
Helen: Reign of Mist is the second book in a planned trilogy called The Oremere Chronicles. RoM follows the unlikely heroine of the series, Bleak, as she starts to face her dark past and take responsibility for herself and her actions. The series itself is a classic high fantasy journey of a group of outsiders who all have their own secrets, but who band together to battle a common enemy 😉
DJ: What were some of your influences for The Oremere Chronicles?
Helen: I love series like Throne of Glass, An Ember in the Ashes and A Darker Shade of Magic, and I suppose it was reading books like these that inspired me to veer away from the literary fiction I was writing and try my hand at YA fantasy.
DJ: Could you briefly tell us a little about your main characters? Do they have any cool quirks or habits, or any reason why readers with sympathize with them?
Helen: The Oremere Chronicles is told from four main points of view: Bleak, Commander Swinton, matriarch warrior Henri and young Dash. The thing that both unites them and sets them apart from one another is that they’re all incredibly flawed characters, and that’s what I love about them. They make plenty of mistakes and have many dark secrets, but there’s still hope for them all.
DJ: How have the reviews been from readers, bloggers, and reviewers for the first book of the The Oremere Chronicles? Is there anything that your audience seems to be particularly enjoying or is eager to find out more about?
Helen: I was amazed at the wonderful reviews and feedback that Heart of Mist received before and after its release last year. In fact, it actually hit the Amazon bestseller lists in under 24 hours of publication, that was incredible. It’s also maintained a 4.5 star average! As for what my readers want to know… Well, I’ve mentioned secrets a few times now, and I definitely have readers asking me to confirm certain hints, or ask about certain characters getting together. I do love hearing who everyone’s shipping!
DJ: The series is not yet complete, but is there a particular theme it explores?
Helen: The Oremere Chronicles explores a number of different themes, the main ones being: identity, belonging, loyalty, addiction, loss, and responsibility. The characters are all different ages, but I like to think many of their experiences and struggles are universal, so readers can relate.
DJ: I hear you offer your readers free prequel stories to the series, can you tell us more about them?
Helen: Of course! A while ago, when I was still writing the first book, Heart of Mist, I wrote a short story that featured the protagonist, Bleak, before the events in the book. It was a way of exploring her development, and her history. It was a really interesting way to find out what made her who she was. I decided to do this regularly, and publish them as e-shorts. There are currently 5 available for free from my website. I release three in between each book, so my readers get their Oremere Chronicles fix while waiting for the next full-length installment 🙂
DJ: Once Reign of Mist is released, what is next for you?
Helen: I’m a big planner, so I’ve already got things underway with the third and final book in The Oremere Chronicles. That will be released in 2019, which sounds far away now, but time flies so quickly when you’re having fun.
As I mentioned, I also publish prequel stories in between book releases, which readers can get here. These stories take place before the events in The Oremere Chronicles and help readers get to know the characters backstories.
I’ve also got different projects planned for when Oremere is finished, but I’ve got to stay quiet about those for now!
DJ: Where can readers find out more about you?
There are lots of different ways readers can find out more about me and get in touch!
