Today I am interviewing Cat Rambo, author of the new fantasy novel, Carpe Glitter.

DJ: Hi Cat! Thanks for agreeing to do this interview!

What is Carpe Glitter about?

Cat: Carpe Glitter is about a woman who, while clearing out the detritus left by her hoarder stage magician grandmother, finds a magical artifact that has drastically affected her family’s history.

DJ: What were some of your influences for Carpe Glitter

Cat: The story grew out of the title, which was a play on the Latin phrase, “carpe diem,” or seize the day. I made Gloria Aim a stage magician, because I love the glitter and theatrics of stage magic, and I also used the story as a way to explore female lineage and mentorship.

DJ: Could you briefly tell us a little about your main characters? Do they have any cool quirks or habits, or any reason why readers with sympathize with them?

Cat: Persephone Aim is determined to be neither like her mother or her grandmother, but she’s been a pawn between them in their ongoing battle all her life. In cleaning out her grandmother’s belongings, packed into three Las Vegas houses, she finds out unexpected things that shed new light on that battle.

DJ: Aside from the main characters in the story, who is a favorite side character or a character with a smaller role for in story? Why?

Cat: Eterno, a stage magician and contemporary of Persephone’s grandmother, who is also a family friend. In my head he’s a Mandy Patinkin type, full of charisma and showmanship.

DJ: What is the world [What is the name of the universe] and setting of Carpe Glitter like?

Cat: It’s set in our own world.

DJ: What was your favorite part about writing Carpe Glitter

Cat: I loved constructing the piles of objects filling the rooms, and making them as sensory and evocative as I could. There’s all sorts of little tributes to moments from my life in there.

DJ: What do you think readers will be talking about most once they finish it?

Cat: I don’t know but I’m looking forward to finding out!

DJ: Did you have a particular goal when you began writing Carpe Glitter? Was there a particular message or meaning you are hoping to get across when readers finish it? Or is there perhaps a certain theme to the story?

Cat: The idea that you have to confront your family’s history, and that often things have multiple sides in that struggle.

DJ: When I read, I love to collect quotes – whether it be because they’re funny, foodie, or have a personal meaning to me. Do you have any favorite quotes from Carpe Glitter that you can share with us?

Cat: “When someone loves you like that, deeply and unconditionally, it’s very hard not to love them back.”

DJ: Now that Carpe Glitter is released, what is next for you?

Cat: I am finishing up the draft of my new fantasy novel, EXILES OF TABAT, for beta readers and then doing the last round of edits on a space opera, YOU SEXY THING. The former is the third of a quartet from Wordfire Press and will appear in early 2020; the latter the first of a series from Tor/MacMillan that is scheduled for 2021.

DJ: Where can readers find out more about you?

Cat:  I hope people will come say hi if they’re at any of the cons I’ll be appearing at, such as Norwescon, Emerald City Comic Con, and WorldCon in 2020!
