Today I am interviewing Alex Fayman, author of the new science fiction, superhero novel, Superhighway.

◊  ◊  ◊

DJ: Hey Alex! Thanks for stopping by to do this interview!

For readers who aren’t familiar with you, could you tell us a little about yourself?

Alex Fayman: Thank you for the invite, DJ! I am a college professor. I teach and research banking. I was born in the former Soviet Union, but thankfully was brought to America by my refugee parents when I was a kid. I grew up in Los Angeles and went to school in Illinois.

DJ: What is Superhighway about?

AF: Superhighway is a novel about an 18 year old orphan who discovers a power to fly through the Internet and change data inside of the Internet. Alex Fine can basically travel anywhere on the planet through the vast computer networks and manipulate archived data along the way. He can also download data into his mind and carry it from the digital world into the physical world. Very quickly, Alex becomes a billionaire, buys a house in Bel Air and million dollar Ferrari, but also tries to do good deeds kind of like a digital Robin Hood. Of course, because he is young, the main character makes many mistakes as he goes on a fantastical Superhighway adventure.

DJ: What were some of your influence for the story?

AF: I would say that, like most people, I have not had an easy/normal life. The experiences that I gathered along the way with education, women, money… were the main influences for the story. Also, I can’t draw or sing or make music, but I have no problem coming up with an amazing story practically on the spot.

DJ: Your main character, Alex Fine, could be described as a type of superhero, but he probably doesn’t have the powers most people would expect from a superhero. Could you briefly tell us a little about Alex? Does he have any cool quirks or habits, or any reason why readers with sympathize with him? More about his powers?

AF: I think that they reason why readers have fallen in love with Superhighway is because it does not read like a typical sci-fi novel. The book is packed with raw human emotion. It is written in first person so the readers get to know what’s inside of Alex Fine’s head and become emotionally attached to him. As he discovers his superpowers and transforms his life into one with an abundance of money and power, he makes impulsive decisions dealing with people and problems.

As far as his powers, Alex can travel anywhere through the Internet by process known as electroportation. By the end of the novel, he learns the origin of his powers. He does go on a wild adventure visiting: Amsterdam, Miami, Hawaii, St. Lucia. He goes to clubs and gets to do fun things we all would love to do. He is able to change data inside the Internet, but he can also download an entire CIA database into his brain and then lay by his pool reading CIA files and watching CIA video files in his head. Many of the 48 reviewers (the book has a 4.7 star average) say that Superhighway is a movie to be made.

DJ: What kind of research did you need to do for Superhighway?

AF: DJ, as I mentioned earlier, my life was my research. I have a college degree in biology and graduate degrees in finance to help with some technical aspects of the story. But it was living my life and going through incredible heart breaks and down periods that were my greatest source of information and inspiration.

DJ: When I read, I love to collect quotes – whether it be because they’re funny, foodie, or have a personal meaning to me. Do you have any favorite quotes from Superhighway that you can share with us?

AF: DJ, this is more than a quote. I hope that’s OK. It is the third paragraph of Superhighway.

“Upon entering a large opening inside of an optic tunnel, I encountered an intense exhibition of flashing lights that failed to captivate my attention. The weakness came on more quickly than usual. A flash fired right in front of my face. I saw a beach and felt the water caressing my feet. A second flash snapped me out of the momentary trance. My strength was waning; the end was near. Another bright flash to my left, and I saw sparks escaping the barrel. I heard the gunshot, and watched her fall. Flash. My heart pounded like a jackhammer as I stepped through the windowpane of a house lit with red neon lights. The stunningly perfect female form held my hand, leading me up the narrow winding staircase into a small room. I saw myself lying naked in front of her as she helped me overcome anxiety. Flash. As my energy wilted and I began to drift, the flashes around me turned into a solid bright light. I saw my father’s face and felt his disapproval of my cowardly exit. It pierced through me like a bolt of lightning, stinging my vaporous soul. Flash. Instantly, I knew that my life could not end. I summoned the remaining morsel of power in order to accelerate in the familiar direction.”

DJ: Have you been reading anything good lately?

AF: I can honestly say that I have not. Superhighway will be a trilogy. I am editing the sequel any free moment I get.

DJ: Where can readers find out more about you?

AF: I think that the best way to learn about Alex Fayman is to read Superhighway. I put my soul into the novel. It is extremely personal.

DJ: Now that Superhighway is out, what is next for you?

AF: As I mentioned above, I am editing the sequel and trying to promote the book as much as I can. I will write a guest blog about my Twitter experience, but will mention that the novel helped me gain over 33,000 followers in less than 10 months. I did not spend a penny on promotion or purchased followers. There’s a lot of excitement about Superhighway.

DJ: Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to answer my questions!

AF: DJ you are amazing for providing me this opportunity to talk about Superhighway with your readers. Thank you so much!
